Located in the Gulf of Naples, Ischia is the largest of the islands of the Campanian Archipelago. In the about 42 square kilometers of the island, there are 6 municipalities, each with its own geographical features, traditions and picturesque locations: Ischia town, Casamicciola, Lacco Ameno, Forio, Barano and Serrara Fontana.

History and Culture

The island of volcanic origin gave birth to the myth of Typhoeus, the rebellious giant confined here by Zeus for his behavior. The history of Ischia has origins that date back to 770 B.C. In all these centuries, it has been the cradle of several civilizations: Greeks, Etruscans, Romans, Byzantines and then Normans, Swabians, Angevins and Aragoneses, who succeeded each other, leaving here clear traces of their cultures and civilizations.

The Archaeological Museum of Pithecusae at Villa Arbusto gathers remarkable evidence of the presence of the various civilizations on the island, from Prehistoric to Roman times, and allows visitors to admire the famous Cup of Nestor: an archaeological find of extraordinary importance, as it bears one of the oldest examples of Greek writing- datable to around the 8th century B.C.-with an epigram taken from Homer's Iliad.

Not to be missed during your vacation in Ischia is the Aragonese Castle, perhaps the most striking monument of all, overlooking the sea on a small island of volcanic origin. The castle, built as a castrum in 474 B.C., reached its heyday in the 14th century, and today is the site of art exhibitions and music and film festivals.

Sea and beaches

Ischia is one of the most beautiful destinations for those who love the sea, but perhaps only a few know that a close encounter with dolphins is always possible in its blue waters. The underwater canyon of Cumae - an important feeding site for fin whales and breeding grounds for stenella and grampi - is home to numerous cetaceans, and it is also an area where groups of sperm whales can be spotted.

Among the many beaches on the island, we recommend the Cava dell'isola beach, in the Bay of Citara, with soft, clear sand. It can be reached from the Providence Hotel by descending only 60 steps, or via a small road of about 150 meters. 400 meters from the hotel is another beautiful beach, the Citara beach, with which we have agreements for discounted umbrella and sunbed rates. Beyond the Soccorso promontory in Forio, there is the Chiaia beach, with shallow waters and fine sand, thus suitable for families with children. Toward Sant'Angelo, the Bay of Sorgeto is worth a visit, a pebble beach with hot springs that give the possibility of swimming in the sea even in winter. Not to be missed are also Maronti Bay, Sant'Angelo Beach, San Montano Beach...and much more.

Thermal Parks and Gardens

Forio's Poseidon Gardens are the largest thermal park on the island and are very close to Hotel Terme Providence. 22 curative thermal pools, private beaches provided with umbrellas and deck chairs, sauna, underwater massages, kneipp groups, restaurants and boutiques round out what this large complex has to offer.

Ischia offers many opportunities to those who seek wellness and relaxation. On the coast of Casamicciola we also recommend a visit to Il Castiglione Park, which can be accessed via a picturesque funicular railway. In the Bay of San Montano is Negombo, where you can lose yourself in the exotic atmosphere of gardens with plants from Australia, Japan, Brazil and South Africa. On summer evenings, light music and jazz concerts brighten up the atmosphere of the gardens. In Sant'angelo d'Ischia, the Tropical Thermal Park and the Cava Scura Thermal Baths are must-see attractions. The former is in a unique location, on a elevated hill overlooking the sea with a view of the famous Tower. The second, on the other hand, features fantastic tufa caves and pools, with waterfalls and springs that reach 90 degrees of temperature.

The Fonte delle Ninfee Nitrodi Thermal Park in Barano is a one-of-a-kind sight. It is equipped with showers and washbasins where the water dispensed is drinkable at 28°C and is highly effective in the treatment of numerous skin disorders such as Psoriasis. Moreover, it promotes and regulates diuresis and improves gastritis and gastroduodenitis.

Those who love nature in all its forms will appreciate a visit to La Mortella Garden, one of the most beautiful in Europe. The gardens were created by Susanna Walton, wife of William Walton, the great 20th-century English composer, who moved to Ischia in 1945. While Sir William composed, Susanna devoted herself to the garden, and over the course of 50 years, she created a true masterpiece, which today is home to thousands of rare and exotic plants. The garden is open to the public from April to November and each year features major musical and theatrical events.
Another botanical park worth visiting is the Ravino Garden. 6,000 square meters featuring Europe's largest and most varied collection of succulent plants, put together by the passion of Captain Giuseppe D'Ambra over more than 50 years.

Ischia by Night

But Ischia is not just about sea and thermal wellness. There are many ways to spend a nice evening and have fun until the morning. Ischia offers a variety of discopubs and American bars with live music late into the night. On the waterfront and in the small squares, you can have fun with your friends, sipping a cocktail and dancing until morning. And a little tip: on your way out of the disco, before going back to your hotel, enjoy a freshly baked Ischian croissant, as per tradition.

In Forio d'Ischia you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the main street, full of clubs, restaurants and boutiques. Alternatively, you can experience the thrill of a nighttime swim in Sorgeto Bay, famous for its warm thermal waters, or in Citara Bay.
